* Does your child want to sing at this year's Holiday Concert? If so, your child must be at the rehearsal on Sunday December 14, 2008, 11 at PS 39, and must be at MS 51 on the night of the concert at 6:30 sharp! (Child care for siblings will be provided at the rehearsal.) We want to include as many children as possible in this year's tribute to Larry Kahn. We will be singing the songs he selected last year, backed by the Parents’ Band. Lyric sheets will be provided. And of course, if you want to sing with us, please join us too! Executive Board Minutes 2009-2009

PS 39 PA Executive Board September 9, 2008

Development Committee Report
Alan presented the group with an organized sheet about fundraising and grant writing. The committee would like to start a match money program, which that sheet has identified to raise money. If people know anyone that is associated with these companies or projects please let Alan know. Jenn made a suggestion that we contact real estate and IKEA companies. Alan suggested to make contacts at these companies in hopes of getting monies donated by next school year. Forest City Ratner Company was also suggested to hit up for funds. Jenn suggested that Alan talk about this with the committee. Alan is working on a letter that will state interest in the PA and give people opportunities to connect with one another, not necessarily a fundraising letter. This letter will be sent out later in the school year.

Treasurer’s Report
Mark will present a report next month. Mark did report that money is coming in from family donations. Teacher stipend is $100.00 and Mark will check with Anita to see if there is anyone else who should get a stipend.

News from Anita
Jenn met with Anita today and reported lunch snack and toilet issues for K and 1st grades. She will talk about it at the next PTA meeting. The children do have 20 minutes to eat, it is not a leisurely lunch but as the weeks go along they will get better with routines. If people have a problem they should call Anita about this.

A special friends/grandparents day will be held on the 1st Friday of December. The special friends/grandparents tell a story about their own lives. Elaine suggested calling it the VIP day. Bagels and juice follows the storytelling, where we can ask for donations from this group. Jenn motioned the vote, Peg seconded it and the group voted yes for this day.

Enrichment Programs
Chess club: it will be scheduled as an enrichment program during the school day from 1st to 5th grade. Children from 2nd to 5th will have an afternoon school program.

Chinese will be offered as an enrichment program for the 2nd graders. The second graders will choose the enrichment program. Someone can take on the role of petitioning to get Chinese language instruction as a class period not as an enrichment.
There are two enrichment clusters – one starting in October and go for 10 weeks. And the other one is in the spring. The one in October will be curriculum based. Enrichment is for grades 2 through 5. The one in the spring will be student interest based.


Pa budget
The PA budget was talked about as well. The new gym teacher has put together a list of equipment, which equals about $1000 dollars. The list will be given to Elaine who knows someone who knows someone who is the head of Modells. Anita is using left over money from Steve Levy for the Renuzilli program.

On a different note, Anita has been laid up with a back injury and wants the parents of PS 39 to know that she is sorry that she has been unavailable the past week. Elaine will send a card to Anita.

School Construction
Window work is on time and on schedule and the yard will be available by end of September. The walls predate asbestos so there is no asbestos in the building. But in the casing of the windows has asbestos. There will be a stealth window replacement. The room is sealed and the windows are pushed out (towards the outside), the workers will remove asbestos and there will be a hazmat cleaning for each room. This will happen between 6pm and 6am.

AUSSIES program
Terry will be moving back to Australia and Julie Howie will be replacing him in January. Julie specializes in upper grades and will gear her staff development for the upper grades in the spring and Terry, who specializes in lower grades, will do his program in the fall. Beth asked if the days allotted for the AUSSIES program has changed and Jenn will get back to us about how many days are allotted for this program. The PTA has allocated $15,000 towards the AUSSIES program.

Communications
A packet will be going home on Monday September 15th. Jenn will present her welcome letter and will attach a membership and an envelope to this welcome letter. The envelope is for families to donate money to the PTA. A calendar that includes the school year and events of the PTA are merged on this calendar which will be inside the handbook. There will also be a class list form.
The “ten ways to donate your time” flyer will be sent home separately.

Class Parent Organization
Joy Canning will be the point person for this organization. She is contacting teachers and giving a clear definition of what a class parent is.

Bathroom Renovation
Bill de Blasio has set aside $400,000 and Marty Markowitz has contributed $100,000 from his budget. The SCA will be visiting the school to determine the extensive of the renovation and how much it will cost. Peg will continue to contact politicians and the SCA and see how parents can help with this huge project.

Supplies
Lesli has reported that 78 children took advantage of this new system. Lesli talked to a lot of teachers and found them to be inundated with supplies. Parents seemed very happy with this new system and so were the teachers. Through this new system Lesli has now formed new contacts with vendors therefore getting supplies for a lot less money. Lesli hopes to present a proposal to redo the stock room, including organizing the supplies for the school and getting shelving.

Merchandise
Beth talked about the new logo that was designed by a student from SVA and she will bring it next time to the executive board. Beth will also be selling some more new t-shirts that have new designs. Beth will set up a table to sell t-shirts at the first general PTA meeting. Melissa Williams will help sell t-shirts that day.

Events Coordination
Elaine has a tracking sheet of what each event needs, like budget, how many volunteers, etc. Elaine has been applying for permits to upcoming events. She has been working closely with Joy canning for the next upcoming event of Potluck dinner on October 3rd. At the general meeting on September 16th Elaine would like for committee chairs to give a quick 1-minute speech about their event. Jenn said she would allow time for this at the first PTA meeting.

Elaine needs money to pay the babysitter and she will organize the payment for the babysitter next week.

Wednesday Bulletin
Yael is in charge of the bulletin and she needs to be contacted by the Monday prior so that it can have a turn around by Donna Baker.

Upcoming events
International Dinner is happening on October 3rd. Wrapping paper and candy sale packets came home today.

PTA general meeting
Melissa McGill wants to ask the general body if anyone wants to do the craft fair since she has had 3 vendors call her. Jenn will present this to the general body.
Pizza Plus will donate and desserts will be potluck. Jenn will ask Pizza Plus for forks and plates and napkins. Jenn has invited Jim Brennan, Bill de Blasio and Marty Markowitz. One politician will be here at 7:30 that night.
Elaine has created name tags for the executive board and teachers. Elaine will make name tags for the staff, the chairs of events and executive board.

Mark has set aside September 19 as a thank you dinner for last year’s Executive
Board.

PS 39 PTA Executive Meeting
November 4, 2008

Principal’s report
Anita has hired a new Music teacher, Brian Carter. He has been substituting in the school for the last 2 weeks (I think, right?) . He used to be a music teacher on Long Island and is very familiar with our student body.

Dance-for-Life residency will begin for second grade in the fall and for the first grade in the spring. Also Mark Morris dance residency will be given for first graders in the fall and third grade in the spring.

We are now partnering with the 9th Street Library this year. They are providing us with some assemblies. The first assembly will be a holiday storyteller and another assembly in the spring is in the works. Donna Baker has been organizing author visits; all of them are free of charge. The authors just wish to sell their books to the student body in return for their visit. Elizabeth Uhlig, Johan??? and another author, Tamison Hall, who is a parent here at PS 39. Jenn Jacobs mentioned getting Paul Zelinsky too. The 9th Street Library has also offered to host author visits at the at the grand army Plaza site.

YMCA
Donna Baker has organized swimming for 2nd grade in the spring at the 9th Street YMCA. They also have the Strong Kids card where students and families can use the Y for things like family swim and the track. The YMCA will come to the school and offer to register the students up. There is also a possibility of having an afterschool program where the YMCA takes kids on trips.

We are also looking for a reciprocal relationship and there is a holiday dinner for their residents and Anita offered to have the students make holiday cards for the residents and also offered for the PTA to make up holiday baskets for the residents. Another suggestion was to conduct a holiday concert for the residents of the Y. The armory was also talked about with the possibility of opening the armory in 2010. PS 39 is second to use the armory for a facility. Ps 107 is first to use the facility since it right across the street.

WINDOW PROJECT
The window project is still going on and the internal part is still going on, the caulking, etc. The front window has still to be done because it has to be special ordered. The work should be completed by February 2009.

PBIS
Stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. Many staff members and teachers are on this committee which sets up behavioral standards for all locations in the school, both inside the classroom and outside the classroom. There are underlying principles determined by the committee that guide the establishment of appropriate behaviors. The expectations will be explained explicitly to the children. It gives the staff and children very clear expectations and common language so that every rule can be established and followed. The staff is on the ones who create the matrices and the guidelines to follow. There is an external coach to help us create and implement these guidelines and the guidance counselor is acting as our internal coach. Are there certain times or locations or subgroups, gender, ethnicity or by grade that are trends where things generally go wrong? PBIS gives us a way to track this information so we can use our resources in a very directed way. There is a checklist that is completed every time the team meets. Matrices are created on the 4 principles and based on the highest need. The staff completed a questionnaire anonymously and the team reviews the results. Anita feels that we have strong classroom structures and she wants to see these structures carried out in other areas of the school day. The program has recognition for students and teachers and staff in terms of positive reinforcement.

Meeting Time Issues
For personal reasons, Anita can no longer meet with the Executive Board in the evenings. Jenn suggested an alternative which 321 uses. They have a Steering Committee that is a smaller part of the executive board. The Steering Committee meets with the principal every other week.

If we implemented a similar structure, the Steering Committee could meet with Anita during the school day and then report back to the Executive Board. This would be beneficial because it would help shorten some of the meeting time. The Steering Committee needs to be a good portion of the executive board, and not just the President. Jenn needs help and cannot be the entire conduit between Anita and the board. A day and time during the school day would be chosen which would accommodate as many people on the board as possible. Jenn proposed, Alan motioned and Melissa Williams seconded the motion.


November 18 PTA General Meeting
Sean from the YMCA offered to give a presentation to the general body about the new partnership the YMCA having with our school. Middle School presentation will not be the topic for this meeting because Anita recently met with upper grade parents about middle school.

Treasurer’s Report
The treasurer reported that we have $26,132.96 as of September. Some bills are outstanding so the above amount may be different. A financial report will be presented on November 18th.

Afterschool Program
Yael talked about the future of the afterschool program. It will be run by the PTA and not a school run program like it is at PS 107. We are thinking of starting this program in January, but Anita would like to make sure that the program is started when the window project is finished.

Alan is meeting with the fundraising committee on November 10th to discuss fundraising throughout the year.

Upcoming Events
Scholastic book fair – Mark Lorenzen needs some help to organize. November 20th will be the bake sale and the book fair will take place some time that week.

We made over $600 at the election bake sale today. People were very generous in giving money to the school during this time. No coffee was served and we still made hand over fist.

Barnes and Nobles book fair will take place on December 6th. We can do a bake sale on the sidewalk.

December 16th is the holiday concert.

Membership forms need to be available at each general meeting.

Auction
Melissa Williams called the Old Stone House and the rates are reasonable. Alan is going to partner with stores along 7th Avenue to have them donate money to the school as well as donate goods to the auction.

New business
Insider pages
This company emailed an offer to Jenn to have authors write about local businesses. It is sort of like a Zagats. The first review gets a dollar-fifty and the second review gets, for example, 50 cents. This would include reviews for anything from dry cleaners to dentists to restaurants.

Flea Market
Melissa Williams suggested having a flea market. We don’t have the foot traffic so we don’t think this would be great idea for the PTA.

PTA report

Jenn introduces staff and teachers. The PTA official name is the PS 39 Parent Association but we are using the PTA name and PS 39 Parent Association interchangeably. You can donate to the association and the application will be in the folder being sent home soon.

What does the PA do?

It builds community, gets funds for needs of the school, and advocates for the school on behalf of our children.

What do we spend our money on?

We spend most of our money on three general categories: staff development and curriculum support, capital goods (like school supplies and furniture) and enrichment programs such as afterschool programs and in school programs like chess in schools and NY philharmonic.

On Friday, the parent body will be getting the PS 39 handbook. Some things to look for: letter from Jenn and PA membership form, check list for committee involvement, student information form (which will be created into a class list), class parent info, list of everything the PTA does and chair committee info. Tania has assembled this folder and needs volunteers to help with this assembly and she will post it when to get together on the yahoo group.

Please join the Yahoo group. The Yahoo group is a general forum for parents to talk about issues going on in the school. Info on how to join the yahoo group is in the folder.

Jenn introduced the executive board members and thanked last year’s executive members.

Jim Brennan attended the PA session. Jim donated money so that the pre-k students have their own bathroom. He also supports the school with a technology grant. Jim will designate an additional $30,000 from his budget to our school. This will be for equipment purchases. Another $7,000 grant will also be awarded to the school. Jim asked that if we have any concerns to contact his office on 7th Ave at 14th street.

Anita told the parent body that Jim has been a huge supporter of our school and thanked him for his support of our school.

Principal’s report

Anita officially welcomed everyone back to school. She apologized for not being here the first few days of school due to back surgery. The window project is going on schedule, which is really great news and scaffolding will be gone first week of October on the 8th street side. Anita thanks families for being patient while the construction continues. Anita talked about extending curriculum work throughout this year. She talked about meeting all the needs of learners in the building.

We had 6 teachers attend professional development at UCONN this past summer for a week. Five teachers attended this conference in the summer of 2007. Anita noted that these teachers are very dedicated to the school to give up their summer vacation to attend this program.

We will be doing 2 cluster enrichment programs this year. The first one will be curriculum based this fall across the grade. The second one will be student interest based offered this spring. We will be doing the Investigation Inquiry Method (IIM), which is how to find information, how to organize it and how to present it. We are extending this from K to 5th grade. Teachers will be giving parent seminar on how to work this method. We are continuing with Renzulli for the students.

Testing

19.3 % increase in ELA scores and 85% of our students are at or above grade level. 93.9% of our students are at or above grade level in math.

Questions addressed

Lunch time

All of our students get 50 minutes of lunchtime, which split between 25 minutes of eating and 25 minutes of recess time. Children just coming out of k and into 1st grade are still getting used routines, especially since they have to share the cafeteria with 2nd grades. Because it takes more time to get used to the routine, but they will get better at this routine. The students are often social and will choose talking to their friend than eating the peanut butter sandwich.

Bathrooms

Children have access to the bathrooms the entire school day. Children go in pairs to the bathrooms and they never go to the bathroom by themselves. There is one hour they cannot go to the bathroom in the cafeteria but they do use the bathroom at the nurse’s room during this hour. If your child has specific bathroom needs, please let your teacher know this so that information can be given out to school aides and nurse.

Bathroom renovation

Peg presented the up date on the bathrooms. We received $400,000 from Bill de Blasio’s budget and $100,000 fro Marty Markowitz’s budget. The Department of School Facilities will be organizing the project and have already met with Anita to get the plans started. Peg will continue to spearhead this project and be in contact with the DSF.

Freya represented Bill De Blasio. On his behalf, he welcomes us back to school. We are launching the green your school contest, based on how to make your school green.

We want to hear from parents about the school system and there is a survey that Freya passed around.

Bill De Blasio is also funding up grades on computers and an afterschool program partnered with Jewish Museum.

Vice President of PTA report/Fundraising

Jenn introduced Alan Siege who talked about fundraising and securing grants for the school. Fundraising includes time, talent, or treasure (wealth, work or wisdom) and we need to think in these terms when doing fundraising for the school. Alan will be communicating with the families of the school through letters throughout the school year.

Elaine talked about the various committees that we have this school year and introduced some of the chairs.

Joy Canning talked about coordinating class parents this year. She will be the communicator between class parents and the PTA and the teacher. We need strong parental support in the classroom. Joy is also in charge of the international potluck dinner. Please bring a dish that reflects your heritage or your favorite dish. There will also be activities and an art show. It is on October 3rd. She asked if there are any people who want to volunteer, to please sign up on the poster.

Arianna Galesi is chairing the Halloween event on October 25th at John Jay School on 7th Avenue. She asked people to sign up for this event for volunteers.

Jenn told the family body that the craft fair is being canceled and if anyone wants to step up and chair this event, they need to contact Melissa McGill or to Jenn Jacobs. Melissa commented that we have built a vendor base and she has information about this. If someone wants to help put it together, it still is a money maker for the school and vendors are starting to recognize our school as a great opportunity.

The candy /wrapping paper sale is our biggest fundraiser. We made close to $6,000 on this fundraiser. You can order stuff for the holidays on line. Kathleen Toimil is in charge of this event.

Lesli Klainberg talked about the supplies for the classrooms. It is also a PTA fundraiser. We did this with our vendor WB Mason and it was very successful. Families of 75 students participated this year and we hope for more next year.

November 18, 2008PS 39 PTA Meeting

YMCA

YMCA (Y) employee Kathy Birro presented the school with a partnership for PS 39 and the Y. The Strong Kids Program YMCA is an initiative that offers kids an opportunity to participate in the programs that they might otherwise not be able to afford. They want to give cards to as many PS 39 kids as possible. They will get a YMCA card and in December the YMCA will start classes for strong kids Y.

Parents need to fill out applications that Kathy gave to the parents at the meeting. The folder had lots of information of what the Y offers the Strong Kids Program. The YMCA looks forward to this partnership. The program is offered for ages 5 to 17. Six guest passes are being offered to each child. Students between the ages of 5 through 12 have to come in with an adult.

They are also offering the "2^nd grade Swim Program" where the 2nd grade children come to the Y during the school day for swim lessons and swim safety. This grade was chosen because of research based on the amount of children of that school age who drowned.

In March 2009, the Y will also be working out of the armory on 8^th avenue and 13^th street.

Principal’s Report

Anita reported the following information:

• She thanks all the parents and families to express their condolences about Mr. Kahn’s passing and she passed this information along to his family.
• Brian Carter was introduced as the new music teacher. He is working hard to make sure that Larry Kahn’s legacy is continued through the music school. He is a licensed music teacher. He has a degree in music education and he is a very accomplished percussionist and works hard to involve physical activity with music. Brian welcomes all suggestions from parents and children. He also taught on Long Island. He is working with parents for the holiday concert in December. He is available on Thursday during parent teacher conferences.
• Picture day is this Friday and 5^th grade students will be having their graduation photos taken that day too.
• Babysitting will be provided in the afternoon and a hired babysitter in the evening. (Camp 4 Kidz)
• Please be prompt with your time for parent teacher conferences.
• Please remember the rapid school dismissal that is the first Monday of every month. Anita will send a letter reminding parents about this dismissal.
• New enrichment partnerships in the school: Mark Morris dance company, the YMCA and the Brooklyn Public Library.
• Enrichment program that is during school day: the school will hold an exhibition in January and another one in the spring. This will be the culminating activity for the enrichment cluster.
• Curriculum based enrichment based clusters, for grades 2, 3, and 4 and 5, which is intergrade, not just within the class. Flyers were sent out to the children and they selected what they were interested in.

K and 1 grades are going to try a pre-enrichment cluster in the spring.

• Assemblies: September was launched with anti bullying sessions, October was NY Philharmonic, November was the political mock election, a storyteller, (Tammy Hall), will be holding an assembly in December for grades 1 to 5. January is a break, February a second assembly with Brooklyn public library the Charles Moore dance company will be performing.
• Mark Morris is working with grade 1 now and grade 3 in the spring
• Dance for life from arts connection thru a health and heart grant program for grades 1 and 2.
• Chess is starting in December for grades 2 thru 5; Monday is the team day and Wednesday is the club day. In house instruction is 1^st thru 5^th grades.
• Our 5^th graders are wrapping gifts for God's Love We Deliver.
• Partnering with the YMCA to provide holiday cards for the residents of the YMCA and provide gifts. Items will be divided up by grade once we know what they need. Toys for kids and slightly used clothing are suggestions that the YMCA is making. All grades are contributing towards the items but the 5^th graders will be packaging them.
• New Victory Theatre is another partnership being formed. We get discount tickets for many of the performances. Look at the Wednesday bulletin for more information.
• In December grade 1 is going to mark Morris performance and get a tour and a Q&A with the dancers and maybe dance on stage with them.
• Young composers will start in the spring after school
• Second grade swim program for a cycle of 8 weeks in the spring with the YMCA.
• The PEEC trip from March in the Poconos for 5^th graders
• Partnership with the Jewish museum for grades 1 and 2. Each grade has 7 sessions and will be studying Chagall. A tour of the museum will be a field trip for all students. The afterschool component is limited to 20 students per grade. This is through Bill de Blasio’s office.
• A huge thanks to Donna baker for organizing these partnerships.
• PBIS: This is a program that is a philosophy and it is developed by the school based on the culture of the school. It is in response from the staff and the parents and we want to see a more systematic approach to discipline. It is proactive not punitive. It looks for consistency of behavior, standards, and language. The program teaches the school and its population about adhering to consistent standards in different areas of the school like on the playground or in the music room. It’s not just for the children but for the staff members as well. We have a team that meets twice a month consisting of 16 people, all the school aides are on it, guidance counselor, parent coordinator, a coach from the program and teachers representing every grade and 3 parents. There are no Paras on this team. The team established 4 Principles: be safe, be respectful, be prepared, be responsible. There are very concrete steps to be followed and puts in place a discipline code for the school.
• Professional development: teachers college for literacy in upper grades, AUSSIE program for lower grades; after January 1st they will swap and TC will be in the lower grades, and AUSSIE's in the upper grades. Almost all professional development this year is focusing on differentiating instruction. Five teachers went to the Confratute program at UCONN this summer. Now we have a lead teacher for each grade. This training focuses on how to move the average or above-average student ahead in academics. This program really gives the teachers the kind of support they need to move these children forward. Teachers will meet monthly to discuss curriculum across the grades.
• We have action research math projects based on our data from pre-k to 5^th grade. It answers the question to how we can strengthen their math skills. K is developing oral math vocabulary, 1st and 2^nd grade children how to explain math and the upper grades are teaching kids the specific strategies.
• Windows will be done by the first week of February.

Recent Events

Thanks for KathleenToimil for the candy and wrapping sale. How much money did we make? The total is about $4300.00. We had an election bake sale we made almost $700. Thanks to everyone who baked and sold the goods. Halloween party was a success and thanks to Arianna for running the event. The scholastic book fair is going to take place on Thursday. Everyone should contribute $5.

Upcoming Events

The parent part of the scholastic book fair will be open in room 103 plus coffee and baked goods will be available. Goods can be dropped off in the morning or at 12 at Lydia’s office. There are teacher wish lists that parents can purchase. This will be on a bulletin board in the room 103. sign up sheet is available for the book fair.

Holiday concert and party will be happening at ms 51 in their auditorium b/c the John Jay auditorium is under construction. It will replace the PTA meeting in December. Look for more information on the Wednesday bulletin. It is not a fundraiser but a community-building project. Please communicate Tony Melione if you have any questions about the concert.

December 6^th

The entire day is dedicated with a partnership with Barnes and Noble and the 10% of the proceeds will go to our school. Remember to get your vouchers!! The teacher wish list will be available at the store too. The 5^th graders will be wrapping and making money for their class trip. Elaine is looking for 3 volunteers every hour to hand out vouchers on the corner of 7^th avenue and 6^th street. The vouchers will be on the PS 39 website. Your children’s artwork will be on display at the store too. They are still trying to get some kind of entertainment for the morning at the store. Weather permitting, the PTA will be having a bake sale in front of john jay, also handing out vouchers from that point too. Letters were sent home with 5^th graders so they can sign up for a shift from 9 to 5pm. Anita and Donna will be teaching the children how to wrap the day before the event.

Other fundraising opportunities

On November 26^th we will be starting a 3-week fundraiser where we will give reviews of local businesses. The insiderpages.com will give our school 1.50 to our school if you are the first one to review a list. If you are the 2^nd to 4^th reviewer, the company will give our school .50. Friends and family can also contribute as reviewers for local businesses.

Development Committee

Alan Siege reported that we are trying to raise money from the parent body. We have raised approximately 2500 in a goal of $25,000.00 this represents only a quarter of the families of our student population. The school is definitely going to lose money and so it is even more important that we raise money for our school. We can contribute to professional development.

The committee will be sending out a letter to the parent body. The committee will also be doing a phone in to the parent body trying to raise money for the school. In the first week of December, a graduate of the school will be doing a short film on the school. He will be filming all the activities that the school is involved and we hope to use this film to raise money. We will also be asking local merchants for donations and if they don’t donate, maybe they could donate at the auction in March.
