Admissions
PS 39 is a New York City zoned school that adheres to the NYC Department of Education (DOE) enrollment process and calendar. According to DOE guidelines, children begin kindergarten in September of the year they turn five. Every child is guaranteed a kindergarten seat at a public school. Once enrolled, students can remain at the same school through its final elementary grade.
Please check our School Tour page for more information regarding school tours for prospective families.
General information regarding NYC Department of Education admission process and policies:
Every child in NYC is guaranteed a spot at a public school based on their address
If you and your family are in temporary housing, a school CAN NOT ask you for supporting documents to prove residency
If you wish to attend a school that your child is not your zoned school, you MUST go through the Family Welcome Center and present a convincing argument as to why your child should be allowed to attend a school other than their zoned school
Priority for admission to New York City elementary schools depends on several factors, including: zoned schools, sibling priority, district priority, current student priority and many other factors. Learn more on the DOE website
Kindergarten admissions eligibility is based on year of birth; your child can register for Kindergarten for the 2024-25 school year if they were born in 2019
