Enrichment Program

Enrichment are grade-specific programs that are selected based on developmental appropriateness and schoolwide and community interests. These short-term workshops occurs during the school day and throughout the year.

Enrichment programming is intended to introduce our children to new activities, develop new interests, and build confidence in order to provide a well-rounded and robust education for all students. All students at PS 39 will participate in at least two enrichment programs this year thanks to the generous support of our Parent Association.

How Enrichment Class Works

Students in grades K to 4 participate in our small group schedule twice a week. A portion of the class leaves for a group enrichment activity while the other stay with the teacher for direct instruction. Small group staff at PS 39 supervise students and assist our teaching artists during enrichment activities.

This model allows for a lower teacher to student ratio during instruction each week while also providing time for unique learning opportunities to supplement our arts and humanities instructions.

Grade 5 is departmentalized this year to help prepare our students for middle school and does not participate in this small group structure. Their enrichment activities take place during normal class time.

Our Enrichment Program Partners

YMCA’s Swim For Life

The Swim for Life program aims to reduce drowning incidents by teaching essential water safety skills and encouraging lifelong fitness habits. Each 2nd-grade class participates in a multi-week program at the Prospect Park YMCA.

Students receive 30 minutes of swim instruction per week during the school day, focusing on developing fundamental swimming skills.

The Talk by Rachel Lotus

Dynamic and engaging, The Sex Talk’s classes empower young people with knowledge and social-emotional skills, confidence, and invaluable connections with their peers. During the six sessions, our Fifth graders will explore creating community, puberty and its role in reproduction, identity, consent and digital media literacy.

Visiting Author Program

PS 39's author visit program brings a diverse range of authors and illustrators to our school, giving students firsthand insights into the art of writing. Funded by proceeds from our annual spring Read-a-thon, held in May during National Screen-Free Week, the program ensures each grade enjoys an author visit and receives a complimentary signed copy of the featured book.

To support our author visits and other literacy events, please consider donating through our Parent Association.
